100% accurate odometer readings within GPS?
Yes, finally!
We recently completed significant changes to our handling of odometer readings across all types of GPS tracking devices.
Note the past 30 days’ mileage is off a bit between my two devices in the same vehicle — that shouldn’t be the case, but it’s trivially fixed:
No GPS Device is ever 100% (except HD-3500′s since they get odometer from the J-1708).
But with an occasional adjustment/calibration, you can get everything back to 100%. Both historically AND moving forward.
The last time I adjusted my vehicle’s 2 devices’ odometer readings was April/June of 2010 — nearly a year ago.
Yesterday I took a picture of my odometer so I could datestamp/register that odometer reading:
I drove 24 miles today & when I stopped in my garage, it was 39720. [note that could be off by up to .9 miles since I don't have a tenths display on my odometer]
GPS Insight allows you to add “odometer waypoints” which can even be in the past (as is this one).
Here I look at the existing odometer reading and then easily add the waypoint of 39696 to adjust the “current” odometer to 39720 (+- .9):
Note that “Rob” has become inaccurate by 12 or so miles in a year of driving:
Now it’s fixed:
And “Rob 4000″ is off by 25 miles after a year since the last adjustment:
And now it’s fixed (we always round to the closest number and 39719.6 is closer to 39720 than 39720.6):
Now everything is “calibrated” between the 2 devices and my car.
The 12 & 25 miles of inaccuracy are “spread” out between all the trips taken since the last calibration entry, and the calibration factor will be used for future reporting and then adjusted to “reality” once another “odometer waypoint” is entered in the future.
We plan to utilize the Wright Express data feed which we receive for our customers’ vehicles in order to automate this as well for all our customers, when the data being entered at the pump is sensible. We will also make it easy to delete these adjustments if they are not wanted, or turn that functionality off at the account or vehicle level if the customer wants it turned off because their drivers aren’t entering good data.
In any case, this data is REALLY as good as it gets in the GPS Tracking industry. You won’t find more accurate mileages anywhere.
Even 20 or so of the “missing” miles for one of my vehicles is because I forgot to reinstall it after a trip until I drove home from the airport. That’s user error, not GPS Insight error… And if you know how to reconstruct reality, you can always enter multiple waypoints to ensure the proper mileage got assigned to the right days.
By the way, this isn’t terribly important for maintenance — but it IS IMPORTANT for companies who bill for mileage, bill their departments or drivers for mileage, or are just sticklers for detail and accuracy, as we are.
Why don’t other GPS companies go to this length to ensure accuracy going back over a year? Because most of them only give you 3 months or 90 days (maybe 6 months max) of historical data access. Remember we give you 5 years and more if you ask for it. All at no charge.
Give us a call with any questions on your odometers — not the most exciting topic, but it’s great to know that we get it right for you.
Rob.
