Unsafe Golf Cart Usage by Rob (with alert follow-up)

We have a golf cart and our house is near a really steep hill.

The golf cart is limited to 25 MPH, even downhill (it engine-brakes to keep you from going too fast).

Unless you turn the ignition off…

Then you can zoom down as long as you have guts before stomping on the brake or turning the car back on:

But when you turn the ignition off, you lose your speedometer, so you don’t know how fast you’re going.

I was curious how fast I could get it to go down the hill, & realized I could just look it up in GPS Insight:

And I can easily see the max speed of 45:

The reason the device keeps reporting even though the ignition is off is because I wanted an easy install & just wired it straight to the battery and programmed it to only report when the vehicle is moving.

This helps me to see that my golf cart hit 45 MPH max on the way down the hill.  And notice that it interprets 5 minutes of non-movement in my garage as “Off” and stops reporting.

And the next step?  Create an alert to let me know any time this is happening so that if my kids try it, they’re in huge trouble:

Any time “Rob Gemcar” goes > 30 MPH (only possible down a hill with the ignition turned off — otherwise it hits 28 or so absolute max), WITHIN our subdivision called Forest Highlands, I will get an SMS text message instantly, as well as an email, alerting me to this fact (along with a map of the location in the email).  I included it in our subdivision so that if it’s ever put on a flatbed for transportation to the dealer or something, it won’t alert as it’s going > 30 MPH on surface streets outside our community (it’s not licensed for streets > 35 MPH).

By the way, we’ve worked with companies in the past to prove that their vehicles were going DOWNHILL when they exceeded the supposed maximum set by them in their rig — they did it by putting the truck in neutral and coasting to more than the max allowable speed.  That’s where I got the idea to check GPS Insight to see how fast the vehicle was actually going (it felt more like 50!).  I promise, it wasn’t that unsafe though…  I value my life.

Note that the actual reporting time of the point as 6:47:32 PM, and it was sent at 6:48:30 PM, which is why the alert appears to be 2 minutes later [it was only 58 seconds, which is typical].  We round “down” and the email/sms round “up” with dates:

Be sure you pick the right cellular coverage for GPS tracking!

Not all companies who track their vehicles need to worry about which cellular provider they use.  Most don’t even know they may have a choice.

But if you do work in remote areas, you should pay attention and work with your GPS provider to ensure you get the right network.

I went to see ‘Mission Impossible’ today with my son and drove into town (Flagstaff) from our house which is in EXTREMELY bad AT&T coverage.

On the way home, I drove a couple miles around in our neighborhood to try to compare the reliability between AT&T and Verizon coverage.

My vehicle has both a Verizon-based device (labeled Rubicon) and an AT&T device (labeled Rubicon PNP).

We have a couple of internal mechanisms for determining how good the coverage ACTUALLY by:

  • Viewing purported AT&T or Verizon coverage
  • Showing ACTUAL cellular “lag” on a map
  • Generating a report of ACTUAL cellular “lag” with a graph

Below is an actual AT&T coverage map showing the area where I typically lose coverage in “light blue” which is not ideal coverage.  In the “dark blue” area, you can see there are very few places where the time for the device to report through the cellular network is more than a few seconds.  In my area, you can see some “tall” pins which visually represent how long it took the device to report (which is really a measure of how far the vehicle had to move before forwarding that data once it recovers cellular coverage):

Note that the Verizon device (Rubicon) has a “pink” line and the AT&T device (Rubicon PNP) is in white.  Verizon shows perfect coverage throughout (not pictured).

Here is the display of my drive WITHOUT the coverage map.  Notice that there are very few “tall” pins meaning very few “lagged” points:

Next I will run a quantitative analysis of today’s data, for just the 2 devices in this vehicle, after quickly creating a “Rubicons” vehicle group containing them both:

I can then run this (internal use) “Lag Report” on the “Rubicons” for today:

Note there is a “landmark” option where we could restrict the report to ONLY data within a certain area we define, such as a mine, or wherever a customer may be concerned about coverage.  Also note above, that GPS Insight still thinks I am driving, since when I pull into my bad coverage and put the car in the garage, sometimes the final ignition off event doesn’t get transmitted until I drive back into coverage the next time I leave.  This is normal behavior for poor coverage areas, and is unavoidable (unless you know enough to choose Verizon when purchasing in these cases, which is the point of this article).

Here is the output, showing 100% coverage for Verizon and 95.8% coverage for AT&T for today’s drive:

The AVERAGE time to report for Verizon is 2 seconds, whereas AT&T averages 7 seconds.  The max for Verizon is 4 seconds, and for AT&T, the max times are 51 seconds and 3 minutes, for when the report reports within 1 minute or 10 minutes (we break it out into 1, 10, 30, 30+ minute “bands”).

Here is the past week, since I drove up to Flagstaff for vacation from Scottsdale, driving through notoriously bad AT&T coverage in the mountains (I know this because my iPhone is AT&T & worthless for that drive) — note that the percentage of < 1 minute reports is 100% for Verizon and only 83.7% for AT&T:

However, the week PRIOR to me leaving for vacation, driving around the more populated Scottsdale/Phoenix area, shows a much better 95.1% performance for AT&T vs. a 99.9% availability percentage for Verizon:

The moral of the story here is threefold:

BEFORE you purchase GPS Tracking devices for your fleet, make sure to determine A) if you have coverage issues in the areas your vehicles travel and B) whether or not you can afford to wait the minutes, hours, or sometimes overnight before the device reports in these areas.

If you may be affected, and aren’t sure, then make sure your GPS Tracking provider can provide not just multiple coverage options, but ALSO the tools to determine if there is a need for one coverage or another, as shown above.

As a point of reference, Verizon devices cost roughly $50 more than AT&T devices (due to additional modem and CDMA licensing costs).  But that’s a onetime cost and will probably amount to less than 5% over the life of the device and service.

If that $50 keeps you from experiencing occasional cellular delays due to poor (typically) AT&T coverage, then it, and finding a company which provides the right coverage (e.g GPS Insight…), is certainly worth considering.

GPS Insight saves my wife & daughter from 3 hours stranded in traffic

As my wife was driving back home after dropping my boys off for a week at sleep-away camp, she hit the worst traffic you can hit.  Cars were stopped dead on a divided mountain road, and people were getting out of their cars since no one was going anywhere.

She called me up to check traffic online through GPS Insight (since she has a device on her car (named “nav2″).

I got “directions” from our directions dashlet, then turned on Traffic :

I was able to instantly pull up the fact that there was an accident 3 miles ahead of her which had the road completely closed, and it was estimated to be closed another 3 hours.

Then I pulled up her location and recent 30 minutes of history within our 3D mapping (Google Earth):

She said people were turning around and driving on the shoulder of the road BACKWARDS to get to the nearest off-ramp.  I told her it was .5 miles.

She called me back and told me everyone was going the wrong way down the on-ramp to get over to the other side of the highway.

Within 3 minutes she had escaped a really bad traffic-jam, before it got jammed up too much behind her.

Then she needed alternate directions which I was able to get her instantly, as well as watch her progress on a route only about 20 miles out of the way.

Which sure beats waiting in traffic for 3 hours.

And a quick right-click “directions from/directions to” in Google Earth tells me she’ll be home in 39 minutes.

Automating ‘I’m coming home’ messages to avoid calls while driving

Most days I leave work around 5:30-6:30 and call my wife to let her know I’ll be home in 10 minutes or so (nice commute, huh?).

I typically call her on Scottsdale Rd., which is busy, and it’s obviously distracting to do so. I shouldn’t be calling people while driving (nor should your drivers be).

I am finally just going to automate an email/text message to her which tells her I’m leaving the office between 4-7 so she’ll have a heads up (e.g. I can pick up a kid from baseball, get home in time to eat with everyone else, etc.).

You can do this for any landmark arrival/departure in an effort to make fewer calls and be proactive about telling someone you’re on your way/arrived/etc.

This is SUPER-EASY to do in 1 minute and may save me from getting into an accident or getting a ticket for talking on the phone while driving.

Here’s how you do this in GPS Insight:

Then customize the particulars:

  • Only my vehicle (Rob 4000)
  • My wife’s email AND cell phone (note this is a true SMS, not an email to an @txt.att.net, so you don’t need to know the carrier)
  • Only during weekdays between 4 PM and 10 PM
  • All day during the weekends (so she knows when I’m heading home all day Saturday/Sunday)
  • Only when I LEAVE (not enter) the landmark “GPS Insight Headquarters”

Then it instantly starts checking, once per minute:

Just to make sure the landmark definition includes where I would normally park, I’ll check that also:

Now when I leave, an automated text and email will go out to home, letting them know I’m on the way (e.g. save me some dinner…).

And I won’t need to be distracted on the road while heading home any longer.

GPS Insight — proud sponsors of my 2 boys’ baseball teams…

Well, it’s not exactly sponsoring the Diamondbacks (or the Cubs for that matter) but GPS Insight now has the proud distinction of being the Mets sponsor in both of my kids’ little leagues.

$90 Parking Ticket is proven ridiculous (but we still have to pay it)

One of our employees who drives our GPS Insight Scion in a car pool took it Saturday morning to a remote area of the desert to go for a run.

He parked off the road, on a pull-out which was nowhere near where cars drive.

He came back to this $90 parking ticket (with my name on it since it’s my car officially…):

So here’s how you prove that Maricopa County Sheriff’s are scrounging around for money for our broke County, using GPS Insight:

Then go to Street View mode & see that it’s a paved pull-off.  Why wouldn’t it be ok to park there to go for a run/ride/hike?

How ridiculous, though.

Even though politics and a County with financial issues trumps GPS evidence sometimes, at least you can clear the suspicion that your driver did the wrong thing.

Also, using our DriverID, you know which driver was in the vehicle at the time of the ticket so you know who to talk with, if the original got “lost.”

Was that my employee that just drove by…? (or my wife?…)

My wife loves the fact that she’s a guinea pig and has a GPS tracking device in her car… (not really)

But it comes in handy really often to know where she & the kids are.  This article shows how quick and convenient it is to use GPS Insight to answer real questions in a useful way, daily.

I was heading out of the office, waiting at the light to head to the store, and a car that looked like hers drove by toward our home.  All the cars in Scottsdale look the same and all the windows are tinted, and we don’t have a vanity license plate I can remember (which probably is the way to know it’s my car…).  I wasn’t sure if it was her heading home from somewhere or just one of the other thousand SUV’s in town.

I thought maybe she would want to turn around and grab dinner with the kids where I was going.

But I didn’t know if it was her car or not, so I pulled out my iPhone & checked the map of all our vehicles.

Within seconds, I knew it was her, thanks to the GPS Insight fleet tracking product.

Here’s how I did it in 10 seconds:

I simply refreshed the link for GPS Insight’s “Mobile Maps” then “zoomed down” to my location using the “zoom to me” button (I don’t know what it’s called, but I have an arrow pointing to it below).  Clicking on the vehicle just North of the intersection shows it’s my wife’s vehicle (Nav2):

Then just to show I’m really at the light waiting to turn left, I click on the pin there (I have 2 devices in my car so both are me):

Then I can show where the cars & the office are using Google Maps’ street view (by pressing the little orange guy shown above):

This isn’t life & death or even business, but gives a good illustration of how fast you can answer questions about where people are at (or perhaps which of your techs just blew a red light in front of you a second ago).

Better GPS Tracking than EZ-1000′s for Skiing

I took my  boys (7 & 9) skiing (snowboarding they correct me every time…) up to Flagstaff AZ this weekend.

I brought my Garmin Edge 705 (a Garmin for bikes, basically) & put it in my coat pocket to get a really good feel for where we went during the weekend.  It logs every 10 seconds for eventual upload (vs. once a minute in real time for the EZ-1000 I brought along as well).

They are really nice, and we don’t sell them — I bought mine at the bike shop.  [We do sell Garmin's for vehicles and can integrate them with our GPSI-4000 GPS tracking solution though...]

The Garmin is an optimist, and thinks I ran up all those hills & burned 5248 calories in the process (had I brought the wireless heart monitor it would have known better):

The “pins” are EZ-1000 points [every minute while in cell coverage, which is spotty on the mountain].  The yellow circles are Garmin points (a LOT more of them).

It’s nice to have that for sports usage.  But if you want to track your vehicles in real time, that’s not an option — you need an active tracking solution like GPS Insight. Both are great products — just for entirely different needs.

Finding my snowboarding kid on the mountain with GPS Insight

I pretty much have a never-ending supply of EZ-1000′s so I brought one skiing with my 2 boys on a recent trip.

Jack, my older son, is old enough to go skiing (boarding, he would correct me) without me. Actually, he has officially passed me by — he does black runs I refuse to do (small on a board is way better than big on skis when it comes to moguls).

I wanted to know where he was at one point so I ran a quick mobile map on my iPhone & put it in “compass mode” so I could see what direction he was from me.

Here it is (I’m the blue dot, Jack is the red pin):

Here he really was (my eyes are better than the 3 megapixel camera on the iPhone…) — note that he’s between the lift & the ski patrol “house” just like the map shows it:

I ran a 3D history of that device for the 2 days I remembered to bring it and put it in Jack’s pocket & it puts him exactly where my iPhone shows him at 1:44 (note the time in the first screen shot). Waiting 4 minutes at the bottom of the hill for his 2 friends:

Also interesting is the straight lines which depict the lifts very clearly. The main lifts are in the “clutter” of dots on the left side, but the lifts we went on once each are really easy to spot toward the top right.

It’s easy to see which runs got the most use by turning off the “time slider” and looking at just the blue path:

My 4 year old daughter Sarah got a Disney Princess jeep from Santa Claus on Christmas (along with a liberally applied Tinkerbell makeup kit, earrings and much much more…).

Per usual, our 3D mapping starts “light & thin” and gets “darker & thicker” so you can see the direction of travel is clockwise around the neighborhood easily, just by looking at it (or by the times which are at 1 minute intervals): [by the way, blue = idling, e.g. zero MPH, & green = moving]
